Do you feel that you need to trim away the fat when planning for a new baby? You’re not the only one. With the current state of the economy, nearly everyone, including parents, needs to be mindful of their finances and only use what is necessary. When it comes to baby products, some items should always be purchased new for the sake of safety, while others are passable secondhand. Additionally, think about the basics you’ll need as a new parent. An article from Mommy’s Baby Journal gives some suggestions and here are additional steps you can take:

• A unisex design is ideal for cribs, especially if you plan to have a second child.
• A fashionable diaper bag is somewhat of a splurge, but make sure the bag holds everything you’ll need.
• Save money by using cloth diapers instead of disposable ones.
• Only use wipes for going out. Instead, use soap and water at home to clean your baby.
• Have multiple four to nine-ounce bottles on hand for feeding your child, especially if you don’t plan to breastfeed. These bottles must be BPA-free.
• Stock up on onesies in sizes 0 to 18 months. Again, try to go for unisex colors if you plan to have multiple children in the future.
• Don’t go expensive with strollers. A moderately-priced model will still be sturdy and safe for your child. Additionally, it should be strong enough to last through the toddler years.
• Have a few swaddling blankets.
• Keep a baby thermometer at home.
• Invest in a baby monitor.

In addition to these items, make sure you have a car seat that meets the needs of babies and toddlers. The child should have neck support as a baby but also enough room to move and sit upright a few years later.
