Whether new parents realize it or not, babies are expensive. From the furniture to diapers to clothing they frequently grow out of, the cost of a baby, as well as other expenses that come with having a child, comes out to be $12,000 per year. Is there any way to cut down this figure?
The tried-and-true way, of course, is accepting hand-me-downs, and we’ve even touted the benefits of purchasing certain baby products secondhand. Yet, a new service for parents appeared recently: Plumgear, a subscription service for baby clothing.
Detailed in Consumer Reports, Plumgear allows parents to rent baby clothing and send it back when a child grows out of it. The service, created by new mother Caroline O’Connor who found out that hand-me-downs and baby gifts provided limited options for clothing, has rapidly grown in popularity since inception.
With “cute, fun, modern stuff,” Plumgear carries baby clothing in sizes 0-3 months through 2T, and all garments are purchased wholesale from Rabbit Moon, Petit Bateau, Angel Dear, Soy Baby, Le Top, Mini Muffin, and other popular brands. Parents can rent baby clothing in sets of five, 10, or 15 pieces, and a typical order contains a combination of pants, shirts, and onesies. For girls, a dress with tights or leggings may be included.
If you are concerned about germs or stains, all clothing is laundered with fragrance-free Seventh Generation detergent. If clothing is too stained or damaged for use, parents are not charged, and the garment is donated.
While having your own baby clothing is still recommended, renting garments for your baby can be particularly helpful if you are living on a budget or just simply want to save on the cost of having a child. Aside from a large selection of garments, the service makes sure all are in good condition and is an alternative to buying new baby clothing every two or three weeks.
If you’re looking to save with your baby, would you consider renting baby clothing?
