If you’re a parent, you’re probably aware of the approaching ban on drop-side cribs. Nevertheless, as this ban approaches, an additional recall of two million drop-side cribs occurred over the past two weeks. As you might remember, a recall of this capacity also occurred at the end of 2009. At the time, two million cribs had been recalled by manufacturer Stork Craft, after infant deaths from suffocation and strangulation. This time around, however, no deaths resulted, but seven manufacturers were cited for having drop-side cribs with safety hazards ranging from falls to entrapment and suffocation risks.

Nine million drop-side cribs have been recalled since 2005, so it’s no wonder that the model is being taken off the market. The most current manufacturers being recalled by the CPSC are Delta Enterprise Corp., Evenflo, Jardine Enterprises, LaJobi, Million Dollar Baby, Simmons Juvenile Products Inc., and Child Craft Industries. The latter brand of the seven recently changed its name to Foundation Worldwide, Inc., so be on the watch for both.

These seven manufacturers now have free repair kits for parents to immobilize the drop side and fix other hazards. Parents, however, should stop using these cribs immediately.

If you’re a parent using a drop-side crib, it’s recommended that you look for a replacement as soon as possible. As the ban on these will go into effect later in the year, you should have a safer crib in place for your child. Additionally, second-hand and hand-me-down cribs are common, and, in this recent recall, you should check the manufacturer and model number, if possible. Many of these recalled cribs were made between 2000 and the present and you could, in fact, be using one given to you by a friend or relative. Many cribs are available on the market, and no other model has had the number of recalls as drop-side designs have.
